FST Draws Crowds to Corporate Sponsor Tent at Cape Cod "Canaliversary"
July 30, 2014
On Tuesday, July 29, 2014, the Cape Cod Canal celebrated its 100th birthday in style with the "Canaliversary" festival at Buzzards Bay Park. The event began at 1 pm and featured musical acts, costumed pirates, antique cars and many other attractions. Enjoying perfect weather, the event ended with an impressive fireworks display over the canal.
Fay, Spofford & Thorndike was one of a handful of corporate sponsors that set up a tent to greet the multiple thousands of residents and visitors who attended the celebration. FST chose to sponsor the event in great part due to its long history of projects on the Cape, including the iconic Bourne and Sagamore Bridges, as well as the Cape Cod Rail Trail, Sagamore Flyover, Belmont Circle and many other waterfront, environmental, and water/wastewater projects throughout the region. This year, coincidentally, is also FST's 100th Anniversary.
FST's tent displayed a copy of the plaque on the Sagamore Bridge noting Fay, Spofford & Thorndike as the design and construction engineers on the project (see photo). FST staff attending the event showed visitors copies of the original plans for the bridge, signed by founder Charles Spofford, as well as a graphical representation of the firm's many projects on the Cape. The tent also featured a historic document from 1938 detailing how the Corps of Engineers commissioned the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to build a scale model of the canal in a warehouse to help guide construction and dredging efforts.
FST handed out souvenir vintage style 1914 folding fans celebrating the joint centennials of the firm and the Canal (see photo), as well as mini-footballs, calendars and other gift items.
Based in Burlington, Mass, with a fully staffed office on Main Street in Hyannis and a 35-person office in nearby Quincy, FST is an engineering, planning and environmental consulting firm.
