FST Takes Gold at ACEC Mass Awards
March 18, 2015
Fay, Spofford & Thorndike's project, Logan International Airport Runway 33L End Safety Area, won a Gold Award at the ACEC Massachusetts 2015 Engineering Excellence Awards Gala on March 18, 2015, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge. FST served as the Massachusetts Port Authority's owner's representative for this design-build project, which was completed in November of 2012, one month ahead of schedule and 3% under budget.
This is FST's second consecutive year as a finalist in the ACEC Massachusetts Awards. Last year, FST won a Gold Award for its Bay Street/Morey Dam project in Taunton. FST also won a Bronze Award for its Logan International Airport Greenway Extension Project at the EEA Gala.
The RW 33L End Safety Area improvement project at Boston's Logan Airport is a safety feature uniquely designed to prevent an accident from turning into a tragedy. In this first airfield design/build project for Massport and the FAA's Northeast Region, the End Safety Area that would support the impact load of a fully loaded Boeing 747 and the dead load of an Airbus A380. It would only be used if an aircraft overruns the runway or lands short. This public safety project is in compliance with a Congressional mandate to bring runway safety areas to FAA standards by 2015. If used, it will reduce potential for serious injury to passengers and damage to aircraft.
The Runway 33L End Safety Area project will also be honored by the national ACEC (American Council of Engineering Companies) at its annual awards gala in April.
