FST Wins Gold, Silver at ACEC-MA Awards
March 27, 2014
Burlington, Massachusetts – Fay, Spofford & Thorndike received high honors for two projects at the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC-MA) Engineering Excellence Gala on March 19.
The Gold Award winner and finalist for the Chapter’s Grand Conceptor Award was the FST-led Bay Street Reconstruction/Morey Dam Construction for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) in Taunton, Massachusetts.
This innovative project involved reconstruction of the Bay Street Bridge and replacement of Morey’s Dam in Taunton. Use of accelerated construction methods shortened the anticipated construction duration and length of time Bay Street was closed. With construction originally anticipated to take two construction seasons, the team replaced the bridge and opened the roadway to traffic within 10 months from the time it was closed. The improved riverbed resulting from the dam replacement included provisions for a fish channel, eel ramp and fish ladder. The project enhances local habitat for fish and other organisms within Lake Sabbatia, the Mill River and the surrounding environment.
Accepting for FST were President and CEO Peter Howe, Transportation Division Director Bill Reed, and Vice President and Project Manager John Hendrickson. Team members included GZA Environmental, Beta Group, Inc. and LEC Environmental.
FST earned a Silver Award for its work on the River Street Bridge Replacement in the Hyde Park section of Boston. Featured in a New York Times article ("Did Someone Order an Instant Bridge?") about MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Construction Program, the River Street Bridge replacement was built next to the existing site and moved into place. This required a shutdown of the bridge only over the span of one weekend.
Accepting the Silver Award for FST were Senior Vice President and Deputy Structural Division Director Paul Harrington and engineer Joe Tierney.
