About this Project

FST designed major improvements to the Hyannis Terminal for the Steamship Authority. The Terminal provides passenger and vehicular service to Nantucket. With the recent addition of a new high speed passenger ferry boat, the Steamship Authority undertook a project to add a dedicated slip for the passenger ferry with a new passenger drop off area. They selected FST to design the improvements and provide engineering services through the construction phase.

The major components include a new ferry Slip No. 2, a vehicle transfer bridge, new ferry Slip No. 3 (new timber wharf and timber fender system), and a large handicap accessible floating dock. The project also consists of major site improvements to traffic circulation, significant improvements to the landscaping, site lighting, storm drainage, and a fueling system.

The new 200-foot long by 30-foot wide timber wharf for the fast ferry will provide space for passengers to wait for the high speed ferry. Access to the ferry will be down a 12-foot wide gangway to a floating dock, and over a movable hydraulic ramp to the bow of the ferry.  A 25-foot wide by 80-foot long open shelter will be constructed on the wharf.  The new high speed ferry slip and vehicle transfer bridge will both be ADA compliant. In addition, after the new slips were operational, the abutment at existing slip no.1 was raised one foot higher to make that bridge ADA compliant.

The $7,600,000 project was fast tracked to be eligible for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. The design schedule was also limited so that the construction work could be begin in September, in the off season, and completed by May.
