About this Project
FST was selected by MTA NYCT to perform “hands-on” inspection of 3 NYCT high arch brick and masonry tunnel structures. Work included assessing the condition of the structures including splitting or fracturing of terra cotta, cracking of masonry and brick, and loosening of metal anchor and support and determining the cause of each condition. Hands-on inspection included tapping and light sounding of the brick and masonry elements as well as non-destructive tests to determine the extent of distressed elements and water intrusion. The inspection typically required contractor support to erect and dismantle scaffolding and work platforms. Nighttime inspection during train service diversion is typically required to minimize passenger services disruptions. FST also provided short and long term recommendations for the identified deficiencies in order to bring the tunnel structures to a state of good repair.
