About this Project
The 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, which follows a former railroad right-of-way through six communities, is historically significant as the first rail trail in the nation. A key recreational and transportation resource for residents and tourists alike, it is one of the most heavily used shared-use trails in the U.S and serves as a major cultural resource and economic engine for local businesses.
FST was selected by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation to rehabilitate and redesign the 25-year old trail. Through some of the most extreme winter weather the Cape has ever seen, FST completed the fast track design within six months to meet the deadline.
Owner: Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR)
Location: Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Highlights: The design included location-specific and corridor-wide improvements, including trail widening, intersection treatments, parking lots, signage, fencing, root barrier installation, and vegetative clearing. Also included were landscaping and trail amenities to enhance the overall trail experience for residents and visitors.
