About this Project
FST prepared three-dimensional structural analysis models for the Tobin Bridge. The work included:
- development of three-dimensional finite element computer models of the Little Mystic span, main Mystic span and approach spans
- development and implementation of a program of instrumentation to evaluate and verify performance of the model
FST prepared a three dimensional geometric model of the 2.25-mile-long bridge in AUTOCAD. The model has been used to generate renderings of the structure and to prepare structural analysis models in the SAP and GT STRUDL. FST has developed software to generate models for various applications.
FST compared and matched analysis results on the Little Mystic and main Mystic truss spans from the original design stress tables. A program of instrumentation was installed on the Little Mystic Truss. The instrumentation is a prototype for a potential long term Structural Health Monitoring system for the bridge.

Highlights: FST compared analysis results from 3D computer models to load ratings prepared for selected components of the structure. The comparisons can help to demonstrate additional capacity available in the structure through use of the more sophisticated modeling approaches.
