About this Project
FST designed 7 miles of gravity sewers, 3 miles of force main sewers, and 5 pumping stations to serve the Sconticut Neck area of the Town of Fairhaven. The area was included as a study area, and was recommended for sewer extensions in the Town’s Facility Plan. FST initially undertook a study to evaluate alternate sewer technologies, sewer system layouts, and pumping station locations. Upon completion of the report, FST designed the system and assisted the Town with construction phase services.
The largest of the five pumping stations was on Bernese Street, and was designed as a wet pit / dry pit type station with a superstructure to house its emergency generator and electrical equipment and controls. The station is located in a residential neighborhood and is in close proximity to recreational land. To minimize the potential for adverse odor impacts, FST designed a pre-fabricated biofiltration odor control system. Pumps were designed for 675 gallons per minute, to handle an estimated 200,000 gallons per day average daily flow.
FST prepared alternate architectural designs for review by the town. Ultimately a precast concrete structure with a pitched, shingled roof, and vinyl sided exterior with a cedar shake appearance was selected to minimize operation and maintenance required by town personnel, and to develop a look to blend into the existing nearby homes.
