MHT Runway Safety Area Improvements

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport

About this Project

FST was the Program Manager on the $32.3 million Runway 6-24 Safety Area Improvement Project at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.  As Program Manager, FST provided management, coordination, resident engineering and inspection, design, and design review on a complex series of projects.

The $12 million reconstruction of Runway 6 included the installation of a major communication duct bank, runway and centerline lights, Taxiway L construction, and safety area improvements.  For the improvements to the Runway 24 safety area, FST  constructed an FAA compliant full safety area and completing the 30% Design Report. The design report included multiple options, including a full 1,000 ft safety area with a four-lane tunnel and the evaluation of EMAS option with 600 ft safety area.

FST provided additional services included in the design report, including:

  • Service road design
  • Safety and security considerations
  • Landside roadway design and traffic study
  • Major utility coordination and relocations
  • Relocation of navigational aids
  • Consideration for approach lighting
