About this Project
FST developed a 7,000-ft long trail, which is now an important community and regional recreational asset.
The trail begins at the downstream entrance to the Quinnipiac Gorge. Signage highlights significant historic features. Notable is the Red Bridge over the Quinnipiac River, considered historical because it is a lenticular pony truss, likely constructed by the old Berlin Iron Bridge Co. Many of this company’s bridges are either listed or are eligible for listing on the Historic Record.
The bridge was rehabilitated to use as a pedestrian crossing. This allowed development of the other side of the river for picnickers with the construction of a gazebo and a spot for fishing with a wheelchair-accessible fishing platform.
Abandoned railroad bridge abutments serves as an overlook for adjacent wetlands. Amenities include scenic overlooks/rest areas or observation points for significant features. The trail attracts hikers, naturalists, and sportsmen to this very natural setting.
Owner: Town of Meriden
Location: Meriden, Connecticut
Highlights: Following an abandoned trolley bed that traverses the Quinnipiac Gorge, a natural geologic phenomenon, the trail offer incredible views and scenery.
