About this Project
FST assessed the feasibility of reusing an abandoned 9-mile Narragansett Pier Railroad ROW for a bikeway. In areas where the railroad corridor had been developed or sold, alternative bicycle routes over public streets were selected to provide a continuous facilty from the South Kingstown railroad station to Narragansett Pier.
FST completed permitting and design on the selected route. Design elements included rehabilitating three bridges, constructing three new bridges, and installing or modifying three traffic signals. During design, FST assessed the feasibility of a 1-mile extension to the South County Museum/Conochet Farm. It traverses a highly sensitive area with extensive wetlands, designated the Narrow River Special Area, an area of critical concern featuring diverse habitats and considerable wildlife. The goal of FST’s careful planning has been to maximize enjoyment of these features while limiting impacts on them.
